CLARENDON COUNTY DAY SET FOR MAY 18, 2013

Columbia, S.C. – Governor Nikki Haley and The Original Six Foundation announced today Clarendon County Day scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  The free activities will take place at Manning High School located at 2155 Paxville Highway in Manning, S.C. This event will be the sixth community day The Original Six Foundation has organized as a part of a major statewide initiative that will help provide the tools and resources needed for challenged South Carolina communities to grow economically.

“We want to support neighbors helping neighbors – from helping employers connect with employees to encouraging healthy families. Raising awareness throughout our state will encourage family projects, school and church projects, civic group projects from all areas of the state committed to helping our neighbors in Clarendon County and beyond," said Gov. Haley.

In partnership with hundreds of community volunteers, the foundation will provide a variety of components and resources that were determined in collaboration with local leaders in Clarendon County.  Activities include a Health Fair, which will provide plenty of family fun while highlighting the importance of personal health maintenance. The Health Fair will offer free medical, dental, eye, chiropractic and diabetic screenings as well as information about health programs. Walmart has donated 200 basketballs and soccer balls to be given away to the first 200 children who have four health screenings done. The Health Fair will offer the Tdap vaccination.  All students entering seventh gradein August 2013 must receive (or have received) a Tdap vaccine in order to attend school.

Additional activities will include a job fair that will provide attendees the opportunity to work on their resume and link them with employers who will be on-site.  There will be job training workshops throughout the day to provide assistance to job seekers. Information about continuing education programs and literacy programs will also be available.  Cocky’s Reading Express will be on hand to perform a program in the Media Center at 12:30 p.m. Outdoor activities for children include a tennis clinic by the USTA and car seat safety checks. All of the events are free to the Clarendon County Public, and the day includes free lunch for all attendees.
